The construction of post-16 educational opportunities.
An analysis of post-compulsory educational transitions in urban settings

Aims and objectives

EDUPOST16 Project (The construction  of  post-16  educational  opportunities.  An analysis of post-compulsory educational transitions in urban settings) is a R+D project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness for the period 2016-2019 (Ref. CSO2016-80004-P). The project is led by the research group GEPS (Globalisation, Education and Social Politics, from UAB (Main Researchers Aina Tarabini and Xavier Bonal) and it is developed in parallel in Barcelona and Madrid, counting with more than 15 participating investigators and the support of four sponsor and observer entities:  Fundación Barcelona Formación Profesional, Observatorio Catalán de la Juventud, Fundación Jaume Bofill y Cooperativa de Investigación social Indaga.

The aim of the project is to explore how young peoples’ educational post-16 choices and transitions are constructed from a threefold approach: territorial, institutional and subjective. In order to achieve this overall objective, the project is structured in three main objectives

  • To estimate the territorial inequality of educational opportunities and to explore the ‘neighbourhood effect’ in post compulsory educational transitions in Madrid and Barcelona cities.

  • To explore the institutional impact of secondary schools in framing post16 educational opportunities, specifically trough career guidance towards post-compulsory education.

  • To understand the subjective ‘horizons of action’ of young people, framing their choices, rationales, expectations and aspirations in relation to post-compulsory education.
